Kiritsu
Meaning and Meaning

Kiritsu, a Japanese word that translates into English as "discipline" or "order", plays a fundamental role in the context of Karate-Do, not only in the execution of martial techniques, but also in the development of values, sense of community and camaraderie among its practitioners.

At its core, Kiritsu (規律) combines two kanji: 規 (ki), which means "rule" or "norm," and 律 (ritsu), which can be translated as "law" or "discipline." The graphic representation of these kanji implies a sense of strict adherence to rules and a regulated order that guides behavior. This concept is not limited to simple obedience to the rules, but rather encompasses a deep internalization of discipline as an intrinsic value.

In Karate-Do, Kiritsu is an essential tool to instill values such as respect, humility and perseverance. Practitioners learn from the beginning that discipline is essential to achieve any goal in the dojo (training place). Through constant practice and sincere effort, karatekas develop resilience and self-control, indispensable qualities both on and off the tatami (training area). Discipline in training translates to continuous improvement and personal improvement.

Kiritsu also fosters a sense of community among practitioners. In the dojo, everyone follows a code of conduct that promotes harmony and mutual respect. This code establishes a structure in which each individual has a role and responsibility within the group, creating an environment where camaraderie and collaboration are essential. Formal greetings and orderly alignment before and after each practice session reinforce the sense of belonging to a community united by a common purpose.

Kiritsu
Kanji and Representation

The kanji 規 (ki) is composed of the radicals for "see" (見) and "table" (木), suggesting a broad and organized vision. On the other hand, 律 (ritsu) includes the radicals "duality" (𠂢) and "broza" (彳), implying a structured balance. Together, they offer a visual image that combines structure with the vision that should guide actions, a perfect representation of the concept of discipline sought in Karate-Do.

Kiritsu is not just a word or an abstract idea in Karate-Do, but an everyday practice that shapes the character of practitioners, reinforces values and builds a strong community. Through this discipline, each karateka not only becomes a better martial artist, but also a better person.
